If I may ask, why do you want your relay to be public?
Discussion
Just to contribute bandwidth to the project generally. I believe that like Tor and Bitcoin wider node distribution promotes freedom and resiliency for the protocol.
I was thinking the same but.
1) Without gossip there is little incentive for clients to connect to small relays
2) I am not sure about the legal/copyright implications of running a node
Addressing item one, I don’t actually have any opinion about whether anyone uses my node or not. It is truly about providing options to people, pure philanthropy.
I support several different P2P technologies using obfuscation currently. While I recognize that personal consequences and fear prevent many from participating and supporting these technologies, these mechanisms are the tools establishment uses to censor and divide members of a populous. Without clear channels of communication we as a society are susceptible to mass formation psychosis and widespread manipulation by the myriad agenda motivated groups in the modern world. Resilience and resistance will only survive through the active support of brave, intelligent individuals.
