This is incorrect. Eggs have a natural "bloom" on the shell--think waxy substance. This protects the egg better. Washing them removes this layer.

An unwashed egg can be stored at room temperature for a few months and be totally fine. A washed egg requires refrigeration and shortens it's freshness.

US regulations require egg washing because chickens are raised in filth. European regulations require eggs to be clean when gathered and don't require washing.
