Any large uptick in a short period is probably bots. Followings grow gradually here based on people finding shared interests

Agree. What's the rationale of creating a load of bots that only follow? I'm social media naive so I have zero knowledge of why that would make sense for someone to spend time on.
Trying to rationalise scammers is a fools errand my friend.
I remember when Nostr took off in China people were registering @elonmusk and @joerogan etc because they didn’t understand how identities worked here and thought they could squat names. Could be something along those lines but who knows
