Protests erupted in Manama, Bahrain, 🇧🇭 after the appointment of a new local Israeli ambassador. Protesters denounced normalization with the Israeli occupation as the war on Gaza and the forced starvation of Palestinians continue to claim lives by the hour. 🇵🇸
🇧🇭 Bahrain was among the first countries to sign the US-backed Abraham Accords in September 2020. Since then, it has exchanged embassies with Israel, signed multiple agreements, expanded business and intelligence ties, and launched direct flights. A close US ally, Manama hosts the largest American naval base in the region and aligns with Washington on “containing Iran” and targeting Yemeni 🇾🇪 forces to counter their maritime blockade in support of Gaza.
The rift between Bahrain’s rulers and its people deepened during the 2011 uprising, which was crushed with curfews, mass arrests, executions, and harsh repression of leftist and Shiite opposition. Today, the government continues to silence pro-Palestinian activism through arbitrary detention, disappearances, and police violence. Protesters also highlight the case of political prisoner Hassain Ali Muhana, who has now spent over 15 days on hunger strike in solidarity with Palestine.
