I wonder if we are aware at how far this invasion of privacy has gone… I was thinking about something as simple as family sharing a music app. Once you do that they all know what you like and listen to. Same with an ebook app/subscription. We are told that this is normal and why would you want to keep these things private.

This makes me uncomfortable even though it’s so innocuous. Because then what next??

Maybe I’m overthinking

Most technological conveniences seem to include more surveillance as a built in feature so that the developers can profit some how. It shouldn't be normal but here we are.

True, and I guess we need to decide what works for us on an individual level. It makes me super uncomfortable.

You're not the only one. I'm not really knowledgeable about alternatives though.

That's a fairly innocuous example, but "the market" passed that milestone a generation ago.

In 2018, Grindr was caught red-handed selling customers HIV status to advertisers (along with everything else). https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/azeenghorayshi/grindr-hiv-status-privacy

No consequences. I'd guess 90% of popular apps would sell everything to anyone with a credit card. No law can bind a multinational, it seems, the only solution is self-custodying almost everything.

And what normie can do that?

True! I was just pondering how far this rabbit hole goes… and I think I live in a bit of a bubble 🙈 so I don’t notice this as much 😊

Advertisers are voracious and will buy anything that gives them relevance. An internet based on advertising on centralized services seems doomed to become a surveillance nightmare, and we're the frogs waking up to the boiling water.
