The focus platform was Ford's C1 "global" platform designed in Cologne.

It was shared by Ford, Mazda, and Volvo for multiple vehicles in each make's lineup (2003-2023).

Yes. Some good cars on thic C platform.

The key was independent rear suspension which made Focus turn so nicely. Its competitors mostly had torsion beam axle which is less complicated, cheaper and shitty.

My experience is specifically within the US.

Aside from VW, the majority of rear beam vehicles have been the entry cost economy vehicles and minivans.

Most are some form of multi-link independent rear.

What made the c1 work was the 10 link, passive rear steer system. (Albeit problematic over time in climates that are hard on elastomer bushings,. The Sonora desert and the Mojave, for example.)
