Mfw people suggest I hold back with critique because other people are volunteers.

Besides the obvious fact that I, and almost everyone I work directly with, are also volunteers, I think it's a false dichotomy to suggest that product quality should be bad, just because a volunteer built it.
volunteer ≠ inept
If anything, volunteers are often unusually-talented or experienced professionals working pro-bono, so the quality should tend slightly-higher, due to what the Germans call "Positivauslese" or (positive selection).
