Saint Gherasim of Tismana, a monk known for his strict ascetic life and deep faith, faced martyrdom during a period of Ottoman incursions. When invaders raided the Tismana Monastery, seeking its treasures, Gherasim refused to reveal the location of the hidden valuables. Enraged by his defiance, the Ottomans tortured and ultimately beheaded him within the monastery walls. His sacrifice protected the monastery and its community.
