Rhizomes form on a few kinds of milkweed. Mainly Common milkweed [pictured] and Showy milkweed.

From germination thru the first fall freeze the plant will turn photosynthesis into root mass.

Growth nodes along the roots allow the plant to grow new stems, as necessary.
