Nope, corruption has always subverted democratic systems that aimed to be truly democratic. What democratic systems need is an effective built-in anti-corruption mechanism.

Also, I’m always interested to understand what better alternative those who critic #democracy as a governance system propose. Usually, they don’t have a more desirable alternative to offer.

Democracy works far better when it's actually limited by a constitution and the state can't print money. I'd give that a try. Otherwise universal suffrage makes everything retarded because it makes the votes of the stupid lazy and otherwise equal to those of the good and great people.
