It doesn't seem like people are using Amber as a login function, aside from Amethyst (unless I'm messing them).

noStrudel has support for it. I added it a little while ago and have been using it since. although DMs are a little buggy with it

Gotcha.

Aren't DMs going through like a transition phase with clients since a month or two back? (transition from what was current to the now latest more secure and private DMs)

I don't know about more private, but NIP-44 was released which is better encryption then what NIP-04 has
