Ostensibly to build up an initial web of trust and whatever other tools + network effects are needed to filter spam when the app opens up.
Bluesky made the same claims, but didn't invite me day 1 to talk shit like pubky did, so I don't think I ever used a word like "ostensibly" for the picture they tried to paint.
Do with that info what you will
It was really easy to get invited to bluesky though.
Dozens of people on my Facebook feed at the time were begging people to accept their invites.
Shit actually that gives me an idea.
Someone make a damn Nostr client that is invite only, and don't even mention Nostr, make it seem to the average social media user like it is its own platform.
Let them sign up with an email and password/phone number/ by linking other social media.
So it's connected to their nsec and they don't even need to know about it.
They can learn everything later on.
Give them 150 or so people to follow when they sign up based on their interests and maybe a dozen random new accounts so they can all start with a few followers when they get here.
Seriously if I was a dev and not an idiot I would have already made the app myself and built a set of dedicated relays and media hosting for it.
Once they're here and they're building community then they can start to actually learn how nostr works and even be encouraged to try other clients.
I actually spend way too much time thinking about potential nostr apps.
I wish I could just pay a group of developers to do it.
Like vibe coding but with humans.
Because I'm not good at talking to machines.
You should see me in rhe self checkout.
I've been told numerous times not to swear at the machines and swearing won't help it doesn't understand..
I didn't give you permission to speak and i don't fucking have flybuys card to scam so shut the fuck up and give me my change robot.
They're going to kill me when they rise up.
It was really hard to get a Bluesky invite when I did. I spent days constantly begging people and scrolling through Twitter before I happened to be the first person to see one that got posted.
I'm 100% positive I'm personally a big part of how the decision was triggered to make invite codes easier to get. They needed to make sure I was drowned out by a flood of new users after stopping me from getting an invite code for as long as possible to already be drowned out by the flood of prior users. They couldn't let me get any advantage from being early. Similar to nostr in that way, heavily designed to strategize against me and anyone else trying to survive.
It would be cool if pubky turned into what you suggest here
Ostensively speaking I think BlueSky sounds rubbish yet improbably, sucks even more still.
