At least, that is what my husband told me last night, when I whined that the men on my software projects must think I'm a dunce because I can't build the things they are building as well as they can.

Or, as he put it:

They are already building those things.

They like talking to you about the things they are building.

They like having you test the things they have built.

They like watching you learn about the things they have built and attempt to build your own versions.

They like being able to talk to someone about what they've built who isn't trying to usurp their title of Official Builder of Things.

The reason feminists tend to hate this concept is because they think, "But what if she eventually gets better than him, at building some particular thing? Won't that throw off the balance and turn her into competition and a war of the sexes will erupt?"

No, it will turn her into a protege and men are proud of a flourishing protege.

When he looks at her excelling, he can say, "I built that."

He remains the Builder.
