They knew what is real food and what is the food for plebs. You do not need organized modern science to know what tastes good and what not. Similar differences in the food given to soldiers in comparison to officers always existed even in Roman times

there used to be (actually still is at some form) a law forbidding people to collect dead wood from the nobles' forests. punishments were existential, sometimes capital.

by the same logic, nobles wanted plebs dead. which is obviously a nonsense.
