I can see why Japs saw the need for the Meiji Restoration, but it remains the oddest form of nationalism I have ever seen and the lingering ideology is killing Japan in the modern day. Hard to say if Japan would've been better off without it though. Would they have been conquered by Europe? China? Russia? Impossible to know, and I wish things had played out differently.
