1.Is this legit?
2.Is it necessary to upgrade to just keep using alby as an on nostr only zap and be zapped wallet(no bells and whistles needed)?

It is recommended, yes. seems you are an early user. Back then the Alby account was connected thought the LNDHub protocol.
That one is limited and since then we use a different API which provides more features (e.g. it also shows you the lightning address in the extension)
You can simply go to "connect wallet" and then select the Alby account.

Where do I find the "name" of my account? I'm at the stage of importing private key into the new account but need that "name" to confirm the import.

You should be able to choose any name for a wallet connection in the extension.

I see. when you add your custom nsec the default nsec that was generated from your master key is removed. this is what needs to be confirmed.
