I was reading about the Romani women last night and esp on them undergoing forced sterilisation - and realised many parts of the world including my own country, implement(ed) this towards certain groups of people to prevent them from multiplying as part of the eugenic policies. This is a “gov’t family planning” of sorts or in reality a form of ethnic cleansing without war - and is deeply disturbing.
In my country this is implemented towards the indigenous groups similar to Canada and the aborigines groups. In the US, this happened at prisons and still happens at detention centres.
The irony is, we often hear arguments about whether or not women should have the right towards contraception and abortion, and the right of life, all while involuntary sterilizations have been rampant. The stark contrast between debates on individual reproductive rights and the systemic violation of these rights through forced sterilization is a significant reminder of the political hype vs reality and distractions within societies.
The historical and ongoing forced sterilizations inflicted upon marginalized groups are deeply troubling. I feel so disturbed about this.
