New England experienced a blizzard on June 6, 1816! This snowfall was a part of the period that came to be known as "eighteen hundred and froze to death" or "the year without a summer." As you can expect, the unusually cold and snowy weather had a detrimental effect on cattle and crops. Although New Englanders were unaware of it at the time, the great volcanic eruption of Mt. Tambora (located in present-day Indonesia) in April 1815 was the source of this extraordinary weather. Tens of thousands of people were killed by the eruption itself, and it probably had an impact on the lives of countless others all across the world.
