By far the most prominent reason for keeping software Closed Source seems to be protecting intellectual property that makes the business viable. To that I would say, yes, I have seen that sometimes open source tech gets "stolen" by somebody with better marketing. And that proves a point that the money to be made comes from the branding and marketing, and not the tech itself.

Fortunately we can vote for open source software by using the open source alternative. And we can promote it easily by teaching others good opsec. Also, closed source software can always rug you in some way.
