That’s the thing, you don’t have to follow the scammer for them to pose as someone in a “trending” thread. And with easy / instant zaps, that may become a huge issue

I 💯 agree.

I'm sure there is a solution, but I'm not sure what it is. Only thing I've seen thrown around is NIP-05 at your own domain. I imagine there's something better to be thought of though.

Ya. We need a galaxy brain solution of some sort.

Wonder if there is some way a client or relay could do verification checks when a new user is created with similar name/tags. A relay could flag and it’s marked as “‘may impersonating” when posting and only be taken down by verification from somewhere? Or certain amount of relays can verify it.

I have no idea I am not that smart with this stuff but just throwing ideas out.

All the existing methods I know of rely on a central authority of truth, not good for us on Nostr.

Not a fan of verification requiring ID either.

Not a fan of identity protection being something only available to "celebs."

It seems one step celebs *do* need to take is reserving their names on the big NIP-05 providers to at least make it a little harder - at least make a scammer set it up themselves on their own domain.

Another step might be utilizing something like Trust Rank like used at nostr.band and show users a warning the first time they zap someone below a certain score. I'm sure that would have it's own issues to work out.

Just spit balling ideas.
