When it comes to the discussion, if proprietary systems are better than fully open source systems then certain comparison like cars can be used. Parents may remember a world where you could just take a car to any car repair shop and they could fix it. Cars nowdays are locked down and filled with technical features so that you simply need to bring a car to a certain specific repair shop because all the others dont have access to relevant informations to fix that car. Older cars could even be fixed by people themself while for never ones its nearly impossible to do so.

For example, last week we tried to explain to our dad how windows 10 and 11 force updates on the user and how that bricked our BIOS (fuck you Dell and M$) but he kept trying to fight back and when we SHOWED him the auto update, he just said "nah you're just wrong"

These are the people who are trying to hold this discussion on tech with us and it ticks us off.

Imho a talk with technical arguments unfortunately leads to nothing there, even if you are 100% correct. This is due to several aspects such as, one does not know it differently, lack of expertise, lack of interest in the technology itself, influence by advertising and much more.

In such cases, it can be advantageous to refer away from tech and towards to a more political view: For example Planned obsolescence.

Every person should be aware by now that certain things that are often used are built in such a way that they quickly break or became unusable after the warranty expires. For example, there are coffee machines, smartphones, laptops or many other things that are daily used.

What would happen if those things are Open Source? One could repair them easily, install a android custom rom which still gets updates, install linux on a older laptop which then still can perform most of everyday tasks fast without the need for a new device.
