If you have a baseline amount of protein say 100g your body will use all of that protein to produce ATP given it has excess calories (Carbs, sugars) to do so. Mass gainers are usually a mix of whey protein and complex carbs to ensure you have enough carbs and protein to repair muscle.

The prisoners wanted the milk (whey) or tuna for protein and needed the complex carbs from instant noodles or bread. Their body had enough energy to convert the protein to ATP because they had the excess carbs to do so.

Ok so mass gainers are just foods with lots of protein and carbs?

I thought you were talking about something else, like creatine or something of that nature.

My mass gainers are eggs on toast.

Beans and rice.

Etc.

Whey powder etc. is too expensive

Those are good carbs and proteins you need. I eat those too. Creatine in terms of muscle building just causes your muscles to hold more sugar water (glycogen) in them (so they look bigger). More glycogen in the muscle during workouts you can fuel them better and usually gives you a quick strength and size increase. Creatine is usually a win-win.
