How were you saying pizza? How was he saying you we’re supposed to say pizza? I’ve only ever heard pizza said one way. I did not know this was a po-tay-to/ po-tah-to, to-may-to/to-mah-to situation.

The normal way? With a t somewhere in the middle? I don't even think he said the word, just *kindly* letting me know that I was speaking my native language wrong. I figured he was going to go on a tangent about how I should say "pee-zuh" like I heard kids in elementary say once or twice, but I didn't care enough to stick around. He barely speaks English, is Mexican & insists he knows everything because, well, he was a doctor in Mexico of course! He told me I shouldn't wear a baseball cap to protect my eyes from the sun in California, too, because it's all just "in my head"

Me just realizing we say pizza like peat-za and not pisa like a double z might suggest. Never thought about the pronunciation of pizza before. Sorry you had to deal with annoying individual.
As Americans we pronounce a lot of words differently than their spelling would suggest
