Direct Messages are private and encrypted, but you can see the metadata, meaning the fact that we're DMing is know, and how frequently we're talking is known, but what we're saying is a mystery. It's private, just not as private as normal DM apps. This is an oversight and hopeful can be fixed in the future.

Private but not anonymous is how I usually explain it. There are fine points to be made but most people usually understand that.
