I completely agree about the confidence level, and I have no idea what the reasoning could be, just something that occurred to me, probably nothing.

Best I could come up with is that the outcome of it publicly would isolate the usa even more, helping prop up their us vs them type of politics 🧐 but still writing it off as sheer incompetence
