yes we have consumer protections in US so that we can return stuff to the store
on several occasions i would buy power tools from home depot, do some home remodeling and then return them - they always took them back without question even when they were obviously used
but i never returned anything i liked and had use for - i only returned stuff that i either didn't like or i knew i would never use again
so in practice it isn't a big problem. any business bankrupted by returns is a shitty business to begin with. i return stuff to Amazon all the time including expensive things like a TV ( because i didn't like the picture quality ) and Jeff Bezos is still one of the richest men on earth
i think this return stuff that seems to be unique to America is good - because it weeds out companies with poor products who get destroyed by returns. Chinese think if they sold you some trash they successfully tricked you - which is true if you bought from China - but if you bought from an American store in America you just return it.
