so it appears that most of the public relays will just ignore any Fediverse posts i forward to them from mostr.pub via my server, whereas when i forward only my own posts via paid relays, that does work, and actually gets them published to more relays than i originally posted them to. free tier Nostr is a bit of a wasteland.

My "organic" so to speak reach is only about 9-10 relays according to your nrcheck tool. I suspect that ain't great comparatively speaking, but I'm somewhat less than uninterested in paid relays. As far as I can tell, no relays that receive my posts broadcast them to any others.
Maybe I look like a spam bot.
my organic reach is 121 relays, but i think this is much helped by relay.mutinywallet.com.
shite. I'm doing this wrong, apparently.

nostr.wine is paid but very popular. filter.nostr.wine is something you get access to if you pay, and it's similar to the spam filter in iris.to - filters your global timeline based on your social web of connections
My principal problem with the paid relays is that I haven't made up my mind yet whether I disagree with the premise.
I certainly can acknowledge the first-order effects of it, I just haven't decideded whether I think they are revolutionary for the good of future social media, or cancerous and going to be the end of all that is good and pure in the world.
Conceptually the most attractive thing to me is the removal of the paradigm of free stuff online meaning you are the product. A small voluntary fee from all users to help make the thing work sounds really really nice to me in my inner hippie free software commie brain. I just cannot decide whether this current iteration will metastasize and kill us all.
