Fall is in the air, so today I am burning some diesel to move firewood down to the house.

I really enjoy cutting and burninwood, but I hate handling and stacking it multiple times, so I starting using a system of totes.

They are cheap and easy to build. Take a pallet, sawzall it half, attach the two halves with four 4' 2X4's and cross brace three sides with scrap lumber. Using an air nailer I can complete one in under 15 minutes. The key to success is using ring shank nails and traditional stringer pallets. The four-way, block/deck pallets don't hold nails well.

They hold an 1/8 of a cord. That's about all the weight my 25hp tractor can handle off road. My work flow is to drop a tree; limb, buck and split it where it falls; stack it into totes; tractor it to a sunny spot to season; then tractor it to the house and burn it.

Yeah when you are doing all the labour it’s a lot. I’ve seen that those rocket mass heaters just sip firewood and can cut your wood consumption by 2/3rd. I’d like to build one. There’s some good vids on Fouch Family Off Grid that I originally saw it on.
