I’d also perhaps focus on some of the universities around London - the environment is often a little better than corporate/suits.

Yeah that is an issue - funding is going to pot (tied with bad management). Perhaps less so in London but a lot of them really relied on the higher fees they charged overseas students but those numbers have fallen quite drastically. It’s definitely not as easy to secure a job these days in any field. The Unis do sometimes have some interesting positions though. And all have libraries or access to them, which can offer other employment avenues. Uni marketing roles are quite common too (website content etc).

Library work is incredibly sought after and competitive weirdly, especially uni libraries. Which is a shame cos I think I might like that. Doesn't mean I won't try, although I hear from people with experience it's a waste of time applying

Yep, UK pay in general is not good across the board. Stagnant.
