I'd like to see a client-side option to delete the 'like' button from all posts I view and create.

The whole concept is ambiguous and useless for ME. Do you like the content of my post or the fact that I posted it?

For example, I could post a story about kitten torture. Kitten torture is awful. Person A likes the post. Do they like kitten torture? Do they like the fact that I posted the story? Do they like both? Do they like something mentioned in the story, such as the fact that the perpetrator was punished? Do they like that they weren't punished and got away with it?

I have no idea. The data (a like) is totally useless to me.

#Amethyst at least let's people choose an emoji other than a heart, but it's still largely ambiguous and unhelpful to me.

A zap, on the other hand, is unambiguous. Someone sent me a specific amount of value for my post. I know that they got a specific amount of value from my post, even if it still isn't clear what they actually valued. I have something tangible rather than an emoji that could mean anything.

It costs nothing to press a heart button. It costs something to press a zap button. A zap is real, specifc data on how much others value what I'm posting.

People paying money for your novel, for example, is a much more valuable signal than your friends and social circle telling you it was good after reading the free copy you gave them.

I believe the same is true for the content you share with people in your social circle. Will they zap you real value (which shows how much they actually value it), or will they only tap a meaningless heart as a free pat on the back?

I've moved to hitting the zap button instead of like buttons, and want to just turn off the like button. If I don't actually find zap worthy value, I do nothing and move on.

#Onlyzaps on Damus is the only one I'm aware of

To be clear, I don't want others to see a like button on my posts (in the same client, #Amethyst for example), nor do I want to be notified of likes from people using other clients. I want it deleted from my world as a concept.

If I remember correctly, snort.social and iris.to have this option, you can use them as web apps

I'm only allowed to use #Amethyst right now, per my challenge, but I should specifiy that I'd like to see a client-side culture shift in general. Meaning all clients offer the option to move to zap only. That's the best way to promote value-for-value in my opinion.

I'm not saying people should have to zap me, only that I get no value from their likes/emojis so they can save the tap. I think a lot of people probably feel this way deep down, unless likes are an addiction for them. That's an issue that deserves it's own separate attention. Many ideals get promoted (and encouraged) because a lot of idiots liked a post. The result is an incentive to like seek rather than post things people are actually willing to send value for. In my opinion, of course. I don't know everything. It's not a simple topic and I'm probably oversimplifing it.

I have already written something like this and I agree with you, but the LIKE culture is so ingrained in the common mindset that the paradigm shift in Nostr culture where value for value's sake is appreciated has yet to take root.

It takes time, but the #zap will be the LIKE of the future.
