I suppose one way to think about it is, which is easier to determine: if one is extracting from a system or if one is producing surplus? I find surplus hard to define for my situation but I more often know when I'm trying to squeeze more out of a system than I should through feedback. Glad my choice to try rewording the 3rd ethic sparked some discussion!

providing a surplus isn't always a good thing. too much of a good thing is a thing.
maybe the 3rd ethic is more about balance. i think it's more about addressing surpluses & deficiencies and making changes based on the observation. mant think it's about redistribution to to the 2nd ethic. it's so much more than that. good luck with the succinct thing though. ;)
I really appreciate finding this conversation today. Thank you for your perspective. I find it more enriching than "fair share" that I've seen in several places.
The phrase "fair share" reminds me of the "everyone gets a trophy " during kids soccer games. It doesn't convey a good feeling for me.
Your definition of this ethic sits right with me. Thank you for sharing.
