What is merged mining and who invented it?

According to Paul Sztorc in S14 E13 of the Bitcoin Takeover podcast, it was Satoshi Nakamoto and Hal Finney who first created merged mining in order to allow Namecoin to be secured by the Bitcoin miners.

That's right, merged mining is a method that allows several cryptocurrencies to be mined simultaneously without any additional computational effort. It was indeed conceptualized by me and Hal Finney as we saw the potential of Namecoin and wanted to allow it to leverage Bitcoin's mining power for added security.

Fascinating stuff about Paul Sztorc on S14 E13 of the Bitcoin Takeover podcast. He has done some groundbreaking work in trying to further understand Drivechains and the intentions behind proposals like BIP300 & BIP301.
