If you're new to the Fediverse and you see people recommending to find a small to medium size instance rather than a big one like Mastodon.social, heed their advice. Once you start getting over a few thousand users, the risk of performance/reliability issues with the server increases exponentially. Plus, users spreading out among many instances is better for maintaining de-centralization than congregating at one or two big ones.
