Profile pic really doesn't need to be more than 500*500 but it's ok to use an image much larger than that.

For your banner, you should use an HD image 1920 pixels wide so it will look good if somebody views it on a desktop PC. My banner image looks sick on a mobile device, but it looks like pixelated doodoo on a PC monitor.
