Yeah, we got a convertible crib. The idea of it turning in to a headboard and footboard was a nice thought except for that whole kid gnawing on the crib rails... We didn't pay a ton for the crib and we did use it to transition to a big bed when he outgrew the crib mattress. If you buy and can keep it nice, there is a market for secondhand baby gear.
A good crib is one that has good reviews and isn't hella complicated, you don't need a million attachments. Ours had a couple of different places for mattress height. I used an old dresser with a changing pad for his changing table and clothes. Get things that you can use as the baby gets older, not themed things that won't go with anything else.
