Our stomachs did not evolve to digest processed vitamins in isolation. Dr. Cate Shannahan talks about this in her book: deep nutrition. For example, the body sees a vitamin C pill as something foreign because vitamin c does not naturally exist in isolation. So often times the body reacts negatively to it and spends more energy trying to remove it from the body. So it may even have a negative effect.
All of that is valid. There are still supplements that provide net benefits to some individuals
