Are you pulling the mullein out by the root or cutting it at the base

Oh you just filled me with joy, its lambs ear. Last year I dried a pound of it before my wife corrected me.
My mullein, I usually cut the leaves at the base. I have ~10 second year plants atm
I have hundreds of mullien plants growing wild on the farm, gun a try smoking it for the supposed mucus benefits.
