Literally this made me think of an amazing moment of cinematographic history that seems to have gone forgotten.
Have you seen In Cold Blood (1967)?
Ugh they done make movies so pretty and clever anymore. It's a noir. So they already were limited with their use of lighting. The actor didn't want to cry during this very emotional scene. So the DP was like trust, I got this. And lit in such a way that the rain cried for him.
