Installed #AlbyHub to try out. The install is very simple.

Still a little unclear as to what it is doing?

if it's self custodial why do we need a link it to a Alby account?

It's not backward compatible so it doesn't seem to connect to and utilize your already existing wallet so any funds you have in your alby wallet isn't instantly available in albyhub after installing and linking it.

Is it utilizing GetAlby's lightning capacity? Is that why we don't need to put up any sats to open a lightning channel? Is the hub just sending a request to alby to open a channel to the hub to allow users to receive payments?

It connects your lightning address and the whole alby account to this wallet, you get notifications and features like the LSP suggestions. there is a version on the roadmap where you can disable this.

> not backward compatible

it should be fully compatible. everything that you know from alby just works once you have the hub setup and linked to your account.

Your funds are also auto transferred to your hub after a channel was opened.

What do you miss here? what do you think is not compatible?

In the hub you directly open your own channel to a recommended LSP (or you open custom channels manually)

hope this helps?

Yes, all that was very helpful.

I remember reading somewhere in the LB set up guide it mentioning something about the lightning addresses not being backward-compatible. I’ll try to find it and link.

I set up a local hub and I’m curious if you know where the default, environmental variables or app settings are located.

I set up the hub in a docker container, but forgot to configure the environment variables. Yet everything works fine and I assume it has to do with default settings. I just can’t find them. Would you happen to know?

I think in docker you just have to make sure that the working directory is a volume and is persistent. - this needs to be backed up.

here are all the default env vars:

https://github.com/getAlby/hub/blob/master/config/models.go#L16-L45

But I think only the WORK_DIR is really only the relevant one for docker. like you see here: https://github.com/getAlby/hub?tab=readme-ov-file#docker

or here in this docker compose file: https://github.com/getAlby/hub/blob/master/docker-compose.yml#L11

Thanks this was helpful. I'd zap you but apparently I drained my alby wallet opening a lightning channel. Which kinda sucks. I'm not liking the UX so far.

It's too easy to make mistakes. I wish there was a better warning of what it costs.

which mistakes do you mean?

And you refer to the cost of opening the first channel?
