My father is the only person I know that, when handed a new book, will open it to a random page and just start reading. Surely, this has to mean something 🤔

I have done this since I first heard about it as a kid. It's a good test to see if your reading level is strong enough for the book in general because you're not falling for a hook at the start or a simplified introduction. Also kind of proves to you one way or another if the book is interesting the whole way through or not.
Good points! I think for works of nonfiction it leans into the “books are tools” mentality. Get to the parts you need, leave the remainder for a later date.
