if we are talking a decade, i suspect a nostr fork will replace nostr.
and the peoples internet will be very different from the corporate internet. mesh networks, LoRa, packet radio, and “store and forward” sneaker nets will all be in play. samizdat as a concept will be wide spread.
Why would a nostr fork replace nostr. Surely nostr would be where the network effect is if it does become huge.
as more corporations and silicon valley douche bags (who are now Austin douche bags) flood in, people will increasingly look for alternatives.

I think you might correct joking aside. There’s always one elitist dude who wants to try pocket some cash for being different.
Well there is that, but what people don’t understand yet, is that these cycles are now the norm. nostr is not the future. it’s the present. another rejection and reinvention wave will come. and another after that.
the real concern is the next replay cycle of totalitarianism which we are heading into now.

The effect of NOSTR will not be to eradicate those services necessarily. If NOSTR networks effect grow those platforms have an incentive to adopt the standard and gain access to all of the other content published in this format.
They can still compete on brand recognition, general UI UX, user experience, etc.
I expect some of them will probably try and do something like "we'll show you content published through nostr, but not write your events out that way" in an attempt to maintain their monopolies (I think this will fail).

IRC is such a dinosaur and yet the most solid, reliable and working IM platform since literally decades. I doubt it will ever die at this point. xD

That said, I think Nostr could overrun Matrix. I am looking into building a PoC of a better chat client and simultaneously introducing new NIPs that I drafted to "fix" chatting on Nostr. It does work, but it is hella clunky. x)
I was just a kid when I first discovered the irc, but I remember all l33t h4hxx0rs at the time discussing client and server RFCs with the same fervor as today's generation and their NIPs.
Maybe you right, irc won't ever die, but I bet some irc:ers mightl enjoy nostr :-)
