If you're on Amethyst you can go into settings and block certain words and terms. Won't stop memes though. You'll just have to mute people as they come up.
Unfortunately, there is no way to do so directly, except by muting people who talk about it or using relays that don't allow it.

Use the mute words option in your client. Probably start by muting the obvious terms: "trump" "biden" "republican" "democrat"...
