What prevents #bitcoin from maintaining a really high fee environment?

Would it be a natural balance? That people will transact less because of the high fee, lowering the fees until a certain balance hits?

Is it economically sustainable for big techs to keep fees high to squeeze plebs? So that they force everyone to rather trade paper bitcoin because it has lower fees?
