She added that she believes "very strongly" in free speech and insisted that it is not her bank's policy to close an account based on "legally held political and personal opinions".

Dame Alison has promised a full review of Coutts' processes to learn how those decisions are made.

Pressure has mounted on the bank to investigate who leaked claims to the BBC that Farage's account had been closed because he did not have enough money.
