I think this Ledger freak out is a bit overblown considering it’s a feature you can just not opt in to.
That being said, what’s the best Bitcoin only hardware wallet if a guy like me was starting to not like the direction ledger is going in? When I bought mine, it was widely recommended as the one to get.

Nobody seems to like Ballet too much, but I personally think it's a great cold storage option.
They are discontinuing their PRO line, but it appears you can still nab one. Not sure why they're phasing it out, probably due to cost, but the idea was pretty slick, IMO. Some didn't like it....
