hah, yeah, that's my point, it's rate limited, and if i want to spawn infinity subdomains, i answer to nobody else if i own a wildcard certificate outright, rather than a freebie from some NGO
the prices are extortion but obviously low enough that i can justify it for a domain i plan on continuing to use well beyond then, and for which i require to be able to make infinity subdomains
i suppose if there was an actually decentralised name resolution protocol it would cost something, and spammy registrations would probably be part of that cost, in mitigation, so it's probably not that far from what it really is worth
