From 1934 to 1976, forced sterilisation of girls was carried out in Sweden as part of a programme to promote national purity.

Fifteen-year-old Swedish girls were sterilised if they did not conform to "the principles of generally accepted ethics". These criteria included disobedience, feeblemindedness, "low intelligence", and being the product of mixed marriages. One girl was sterilised because she could not read the blackboard. She was considered mentally retarded, but it later turned out she simply needed glasses.

Neighbouring countries Norway and Denmark also conducted similar programmes, sterilising 40,000 and 60,000 women, respectively. Eugenics was also widespread in Canada and the United States: in North Carolina alone, more than 7,700 women were sterilised by 1973.

It was only in 1999 that Sweden finally began compensating some of its victims.
