Why are so many comments hidden? People are expressing opposition, why hide their comments?

Because bitcoiners have fallen. Politics and censorship has infected the bitcoin community.

I don't completely understand what's going on but from what I understand some people are trying to fundamentally change Bitcoin and centralise control, in a way that makes it easier for bad actors to do bad things.

No, that's not what's happening.
What you *could* say is they want to make it easier for bad actors to do a bad thing, to prevent them from doing a way, way worse thing. Kinda like leaving your car doors unlocked in the city so thieves don't break your windows.
Someone proposed to remove the data carrier limit because it caused multiple protocols to store data in unspendable outputs instead of OP_RETURN outputs. They proposed this because unspendable outputs are really bad, objectively way worse than larger OP_RETURN outputs. Even pruned nodes can never forget these unspendable outputs, they have to carry them forever, and their existence slows down every node's block processing.
A bunch of angry, low information people flooded the github discussion and the core developers overreacted and locked the thread.
I'm always treat bitcoin as money, use it whenever I can, or convert to fiat if not. I don't understand why my money need some new features every months/years 🥲

Read the whole thing and although its way above my head I can tell it's not good whatever the hell is going on.
Also the mods on this thread seem like jerks and they're not happy about normal people reading the information or talking about it.
