I don't think they anticipated the Streisand effect that JBP and Douglas Murray is creating.
I’m guessing they are attempting to gain support of the npc masses, and pseudo thinkers. Also those who virtue signal and don’t attempt to, or can’t, think critically. I think you’re right to some degree, though they have many politicians in their favour, by various means.
