-THE BITCOIN BORACAY ISLAND LIFE-

Boracay Lumot Season: Nature’s Unique Wonder 🌊

Boracay’s Lumot Season is a natural occurrence during the dry season, starting in the first quarter of the year. It’s a fascinating part of the island’s ecosystem and charm!

Green algae, also known as lumot in the Philippines, is a natural phenomenon that occurs in Boracay during the dry season.

The algae is most noticeable from February to May, especially as the weather warms.

What is the algae?

The algae is a light to dark green chlorophyte called Ulva reticulata.

It's also known as ribbon sea lettuce in the world and lumot in the Philippines

It has holes of different shapes and sizes and smooth margins.

What causes the algae?

Untreated wastewater and soaps and detergents flushed out to the sea are suspected causes of the algae.

Fertilizers, pet waste, improperly functioning septic tanks, grass clippings, leaves, and other yard wastes can also contribute to algae blooms.

Is the algae harmful?

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) says the moss is non-toxic or safe for those who swim on the beach.

However, algae-affected water may not be suitable for drinking, recreation, or agricultural use.

When does the algae season occur?

The exact timing of the lumot season can vary each year based on sea conditions.

Did You Know?

Locals believe that dried lumot eventually becomes part of Boracay’s iconic white sand.
